In UNIST Design, our education is built around labs. Internship at a lab is an opportunity for students to learn more about subject area, relevant approaches and methods, as well as work ethics required for their future academic / professional paths. If you do not yet know all the labs in UNIST Design, visit the department's website and have a look around.
Students of UNIST Design can apply for internship for credit. This means in practice that the applying student and the professor discuss to find out a mutual interest – a project that will educate the student and contribute to New Design Studio at the same time. The student will work in the lab for a designated time period, produce visible result and get credits. In New Design Studio, it takes 100 hours to get 3 study credits. The actual time period during which those hours will be fulfilled can be flexible. The student will be matched with one or more graduate student(s) and will have regular meetings with the professor.
<aside> 💡 If you’re a bachelor’s student in UNIST, there are important dates for your internship credit – (1) when you apply and (2) submit your report on UNIST Portal. The director cannot keep track of these things, so it is ultimately the intern students’ responsibility to do so and notify the director on Slack (preferable) or via email. This is important because once the dates are passed and your application or report is not submitted, the system cannot handle your case anymore.

UNIST students who have successfully finished their internship for credit in New Design Studio or other labs in UNIST Design can apply for a paid internships. Paid internship is project-based and those might not be available at all times. It is expected for those who have already acquired their internship credits in other labs to submit a portfolio upon request. The student will be matched with one or more graduate student(s) and will have regular meetings with the professor to conduct lab projects or industry- or government-funded projects.
Bachelor’s students that are not from UNIST can also apply for internship. The administrative path can be varied – there are U-SURP or U-WURP, but also other paths. Please send your CV and portfolio in PDF and a written motivation text in an email message to the professor. We will then schedule a Zoom meeting and take it from there.
Drop an email with (1) a short passage about your interest and motivation + (2) what type of internship you're aiming at + (3) a portfolio to professor Seungho Park-Lee: seungholee [a] unist.ac.kr (don't forget to change "[a]" to "@" before sending it)!
Interns are project based – the relationship with NewDesign Studio becomes terminated when each project ends. There will be a discussion on whether or not he or she will remain in the lab for the next project. This enables NewDesign Studio to accept next interns – to educate more students – and also the students to explore other labs in UNIST Design.
Once an internship concludes, the student is considered an alumni of NDS.
